¹¹ The angel of the Lord^(A) came and sat down under the oak in Ophrah^(B) that belonged to Joash^(C) the Abiezrite,^(D) where his son Gideon^(E) was threshing^(F) wheat in a winepress^(G) to keep it from the Midianites.

²⁹ They asked each other, “Who did this?”

When they carefully investigated, they were told, “Gideon son of Joash^(A) did it.”

³¹ But Joash replied to the hostile crowd around him, “Are you going to plead Baal’s cause?^(A) Are you trying to save him? Whoever fights for him shall be put to death by morning! If Baal really is a god, he can defend himself when someone breaks down his altar.”

¹⁴ His friend responded, “This can be nothing other than the sword of Gideon son of Joash,^(A) the Israelite. God has given the Midianites and the whole camp into his hands.”

¹³ Gideon son of Joash^(A) then returned from the battle by the Pass of Heres.^(B)

²⁹ Jerub-Baal^(A) son of Joash^(B) went back home to live. ³⁰ He had seventy sons^(C) of his own, for he had many wives. ³¹ His concubine,^(D) who lived in Shechem, also bore him a son, whom he named Abimelek.^{(E) 32} Gideon son of Joash died at a good old age^(F) and was buried in the tomb of his father Joash in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.
